The government of India on Monday evening issued a notification for the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act, or CAA, which is set to be implemented just weeks before the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The CAA was cleared by Parliament in December 2019 amid protests by activists and opposition politicians. Following the notification, protests erupted in many cities in India and it's expected to continue for the next few weeks.
