Pope Francis will preside over a consistory for the creation of 21 new cardinals September 30. With the ninth consistory of his ten year papacy, Pope Francis has selected over 70% of the College of Cardinals which will elect his successor. The Argentine Pope has elevated prelates from around the world to the highest ranking, including the 'peripheries of the Church' close to his heart. The Consistory falls on the eve of the Synod on Synodality promulgated by the Pope, which opens on October 4 with representatives from around the world.
