Amazon Summit
Belem, Brazil | August 8-9, 2023

Brazil will host the Amazon summit in the historic city of Belem, near the mouth of the Amazon River, on Aug. 8 and 9.

Policymakers and representatives from civil society will discuss how to face up to the immense challenges of coordinating policy to protect the world’s largest rainforest and arrest climate change, as well as to shore up security in a region plagued by organized crime.

Foreign ministers and environment ministers from the eight South American countries and French territory that contain the Amazon will meet Aug. 7, the day before presidents from the countries convene. France’s President Emmanuel Macron has been invited, but has yet to confirm.

The nations have also invited the presidents of Norway and Germany, which have been large contributors to Brazil’s Amazon Fund, as well as the presidents of rainforest nations Indonesia, Republic of Congo, and Democratic Republic of Congo; the latter two have confirmed attendance.
