The head of the United Nations Special Mission in Khartoum, Volker Peretz, affirmed that Sudan is facing the chances of the democratic transition fading, in the absence of a political solution, since last October, and pointed to the failure of all attempts to reach a consensus between the political forces and the Sudanese army.
Volcker called on the Secretary-General of the United Nations to urge civilians and military personnel in Khartoum to immediately start holding talks on the tasks and roles of each of them in the transitional period.
Volcker said in his report, according to Al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper, that civilians should be more willing to form a government, and stressed the readiness of the tripartite mechanism to conduct a dialogue that leads to a political agreement.
