On Wednesday, US Ambassador John Godfrey arrived in Khartoum as the first ambassador to be appointed from the White House in a quarter of a century
The step comes after understandings between Washington and Khartoum, during which Khartoum made several concessions in order to improve the relations of the two countries and restore them to their previous era.
With the Sudanese army’s announcement of a package of measures according to which it overthrew Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok and his government last October, voices appeared among the forces of the street calling on Washington to withdraw from sending its ambassador to Khartoum, as was agreed upon with Hamdok’s government, considering that the step is a recognition of the ruling regime in Sudan.

It is noteworthy that Sudan has faced an American boycott and a series of sanctions since 1993 after hosting leaders of terrorist organizations in Khartoum, including al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

The US embassy said in a statement that the arrival of the US ambassador to Khartoum to take over his duties comes at a time when Sudan is going through worsening turmoil and a declining economy since the military coup that Khartoum witnessed last October.
