One Touch Media
The Ukrainian crisis reared its head on Sudan, and its first effects began at the end of last week on the rise in wheat and flour prices in the country
Sudan depends on its supply of wheat on importing about 95% of its needs from the Black Sea countries and Russia, at an amount of $1.1 billion.
Sudan needs more than two million tons of wheat for local consumption annually, as local production in the country suffices between 12 to 17 percent of the needs.
The Ukrainian crisis led to a rise in bread prices in Sudan, as the price of a single loaf of bread increased from 30 to 40 pounds during the past days, while bakery owners are still complaining about material losses due to the high prices of flour and its accessories.
Last January, the government lifted subsidies on flour, which affected the prices of bread, which jumped from five pounds per bread to 20 pounds before reaching 40 pounds after the outbreak of the Ukrainian-Russian war.
