Four suspects including an Iranian diplomat face trial in Belgium on charges of taking part in a 2018 plot to bomb an Iranian opposition rally near Paris.

It is the first time a serving diplomat from Iran has been arrested and charged with terrorism in Europe, with Belgian investigators believing that the actions were approved by those at the top of the Iranian regime.

In July 2018, Belgian anti-terror prosecutors announced they had foiled an attempt to bomb a June 30 meeting of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), an exiled opposition movement, which the Tehran regime considers a “terrorist group,” in Villepinte outside the French capital.

The day of the meeting, a Belgian couple of Iranian descent was arrested driving in the Brussels region with half a kilo of the unstable explosive TATP and a detonator.

The device was found “wrapped in plastic and concealed in the lining of a toiletry bag” with the remote trigger found among menstrual hygiene items in a separate bag.

An Iranian diplomat posted in Vienna, was later arrested by German police in connection with the alleged plot and transferred to Belgian custody in October 2018.

Despite denials of involvement by Tehran, the plot shed light on the willingness of the Iranian regime to get involved in terrorism violence on European soil. France has accused Iranian intelligence of being behind the plot.
