Japan's Emperor Akihito is to abdicate the Chrysanthemum Throne in favour of his son, Crown Prince Naruhito. Akihito cited his age and health concerns when announcing his decision to abdicate, a move not seen in Japan for some two centuries.

Abdication of Emperor Akihito

TOKYO, JAPAN

Emperor Akihito of Japan will abdicate on 30 April 2019. He will be the first Japanese Emperor to do so in over two hundred years. This marks the end of the Heisei period, the first character of which means “peace”. A name for the new era will be chosen later this year. Crown Prince Naruhito will succeed his father and the enthronement ceremony will likely happen on 22 October 2019. Please state your interest by Monday 15 April.
