The presidential race is filled with many questions. The poll leader the last year, former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, is in jail and will not be on the ballot. The candidate da Silva appointed to take his place, Fernando Haddad, is polling a distant second to Jair Bolsonaro, a former army captain with a long history of offensive comments about women, gays, transsexuals and minorities. Bolsonaro, who some fashion similar to U.S. President Donald Trump for his brash way of speaking, was stabbed and almost died while campaigning Sept. 6. He has had two surgeries and has continued his campaign from the hospital.

While Bolsonaro will likely win the first round on Oct. 7, polls project he’ll get far less than the 50 percent necessary for victory. That means a runoff will likely be held Oct. 28.
