POPE FRANCIS IN BARI: DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST
BARI, ITALY

Pope Francis meets with religious leaders from Christian churches of the Middle East in the southern Italian coastal city of Bari on Saturday, July 7 for a day of prayer dedicated to peace in the Middle East.

The heads of all the Eastern churches and Christian communities, Catholic and Orthodox alike, have been invited by Pope Francis to join the day of prayer in Bari as part of his wider ecumenical push for greater Christian unity.

Most recently, a similar event took place back in 1991, when Catholic representatives of nations involved in the first Gulf War were invited to the Vatican by Pope John Paul II to pray for peace. At the time, Orthodox leaders were not amongst those present.

The religious leaders will meet at the main basilica in Bari, where the relics of St. Nicholas, venerated by Catholics and Orthodox alike, are kept. The Basilica of St. Nicholas is a popular pilgrimage destination for many Eastern Christians and is traditionally renowned as a point of ecumenical union, also thanks to an Orthodox chapel it hosts that permits Orthodox liturgies to be celebrated at its altar.
