28.06.2018Poland: Poland approves changes to Holocaust law to end Polish-Isreali conflict *** ARCHIVE

TVN News & Services Agency

On Wednesday Polish Parliament has changed the controversial law on the Institute of National Remembrance (so-called Holocaust Law) which assumed punishment for blaming Poland and Poles for cooperation in the Holocaust. The amendments passed by the ruling majority assume withdrawal from criminal sanctions against those who suggest Polish involvement in the Shoah and introduce civil sanctions instead.

Later that day the Prime Ministers of Poland and Israel - Mateusz Morawiecki in Warsaw and Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv - signed a joint statement to end a months-long dispute over an anti-defamation law that soured bilateral ties.
Morawiecki told a news conference in Warsaw that the contested law helped stimulate international debate about Poland’s wartime history and its role in the Holocaust. At a simultaneous conference in Tel Aviv, Israeli PM said that Israel welcomed Poland's decision to amend the controversial law.
