CONFIDENCE VOTE AGAINST PM MARIANO RAJOY
MADRID, SPAIN
31 MAY 2018

A no-confidence motion filed by Spain’s main opposition Socialist Party against Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will be debated in the Spanish Congress on Thursday 31st May and Friday1st June .

The initiative is seeking to remove the Popular Party (PP) and to replace him with Socialist secretary general Pedro Sánchez.

Spanish politics was shaken last week after a court judgement in a corruption case involving many members of the ruling Popular Party (PP). .Dozens of people related to Rajoy PP, including a former treasurer, were convicted last week of a range of crimes relating to the use of an illegal slush fund that helped finance party election campaigns between 1999 and 2005.

It is far from clear if the motion will succeed . The liberal Ciudadanos party has said it would not back the Socialist motion. To pass, it need the support of the far-left Podemos party and regional parties with conflicting interests.
The debate will start on Thursday, with the no confidence vote scheduled on Friday
