Pope Francis will visit Colombia in September as part of a trip to celebrate the South American nation’s steps toward ending five decades of armed conflict.

It will be the first papal visit to the staunchly Roman Catholic country in 31 years.

The first Latin American pope will arrive in Bogota on Sept. 6 and visit three other cities — Medellin, Cartagena and Villavicencio — before returning to Rome on Sept. 11.

PAPAL VISIT TO COLOMBIA

SEPTEMBER 5TH-10TH, 2017

Pope Francis will travel to Colombia in mid-September and visit the cities of Bogota, Villavicencio, Medellin and Cartagena.

The visit comes amid a new peace deal between the Colombian government and FARC rebels after 52 years of war. It is unusual for the Pope to visit only one country on overseas travel, something church officials say points to the importance Pope Francis places on this visit.
