ECUADORIAN GENERAL ELECTION
QUITO, ECUADOR | 18-20 FEBRUARY 2017
Ecuadorians head to the ballot box Sunday, tasked with choosing between a candidate vowing to continue President Rafael Correa’s populist platform or favor one of the more conservative contenders pledging to cut taxes and stimulate the Andean nation’s flagging economy.
The outcome will be watched closely in Latin America, where voters in countries like Peru, Brazil and Argentina have shifted right in recent elections. Correa is the only president Ecuadorians have known in the last 10 years and while he has been praised for improving inequality and expanding access to healthcare and education, a majority of Ecuadorians say they want significant change.
The Associated Press will provide live stand-up positions at a roof terrace in Quito, overlooking the city skyline.
