ITALY EARTHQUAKE
VISSO, ITALY
27-29 OCTOBER 2016

Two strong earthquakes rocked central Italy on Wednesday night, causing some damage to the town of Ussita just two months after a deadly earthquake hit nearby cities and towns, claiming 300 lives.

Hours after the temblors hit, there were no reports of serious injuries or signs of people trapped in rubble, said the head of Italy’s civil protection agency, Fabrizio Curcio.

A handful of people were treated for slight injuries or anxiety at area hospitals in the most affected regions of Umbria and Le Marche, he said. A 73-year-old man died of a heart attack, possibly brought on by the quakes, local authorities told the ANSA news agency.“All told, the information so far is that it’s not as catastrophic” as it could have been, Curcio said.

The first quake struck at 7.10pm and could be felt across central Italy and as far north as Venice and as far south as Caserta. The second, stronger quake, with epicenter near Visso at a depth of 10km, measured 6.1 on the Richter scale and struck at 9.18pm. Both tremors were felt strongly in the capital, Rome.
