The world’s longest-serving head of state and Thailand’s longest reigning monarch has died.

THAILAND- KING BHUMIBOL DIES
BANKOK, THAILAND

Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej has died at the age of 88.
He was the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history, serving for more than 70 years. He was also one of the richest royals in the world with an estimated wealth of US$30 billion in 2010. King Bhumibol was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and educated in Switzerland.
He acceded to the throne in 1946 after his brother,
King Ananda Mahidol, died in an unexplained shooting accident. He was seen as a stabilising influence in a country which, during his reign, saw numerous military coups and dozens of prime ministers. In recent years the king suffered from increasingly frail health, spending much of his time in hospital.
