On September 1st, 2016 Poland will commemorate the 77th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War, by paying a tribute to the military and civilian casualties. Celebrations with participation of Polish officials and war veterans will be held in Warsaw, at the Westerplatte peninsula and other Polish cities.

Ceremonies to mark the 77th anniversary of the beginning of World War II will be held on Thursday September 1st at the Westerplatte peninsula.

The decision by Nazi Germany to invade Poland on 1st September 1939 led to Britain and France declaring war against Germany two days later.

German battleship the Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on Westerplatte at point blank range, coinciding with the German Wehrmacht's invasion of Poland from the West, East and South.
