Reuters is seeking an outstanding and enterprising newsroom leader to drive our coverage of Greater China, one of the most important and challenging stories of our time. Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to extend his authoritarian rule at home and assertive exercise of power abroad after securing a historic third term as leader. With youth unemployment at record highs, growth near historic lows, a property crisis and eye-watering debt levels, China faces once-in-a-generation economic challenges and a chaotic exit from its zero-COVID policy that has exacted a heavy toll on the world’s second-largest economy. China’s hospitals and crematoriums are overwhelmed as the virus rips through its 1.4 billion population after Xi abruptly ditched his signature pandemic controls, following nationwide protests in mainland China’s biggest wave of civil disobedience since he took power 10 years ago. Ties with the West have plunged to historic lows over Taiwan as well as China’s human rights record in Xinjiang, its crackdown on Hong Kong and diplomatic support for Russia despite the war in Ukraine. Xi’s intensifying campaign to seize democratic governed Taiwan has raised fears of a military conflict in the coming decade. The successful candidate will lead agenda-setting coverage of China while leading newsrooms in challenging environments with limited media access. The person will set coverage priorities and provide direction to our dozens of journalists in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Taipei; produce in-depth and distinguished journalism; and oversee breaking news under pressure. He or she will have a history of leading news teams and a good understanding of the news needs of financial specialists, media subscribers and the readers of Reuters.com. The bureau chief will also have a knack for spotting the stories that demand global attention and an understanding of how to tell those across video, pictures, graphics and text. As Greater China Bureau Chief, he/she will build on the excellent work of our Greater China team and take us to the next level with deep insights into China and its place in the world. The position will be based in Beijing. |
