VIDEO JOURNALIST ON THE MENA REGIONAL DESK (F/M) ______________________________________________________________________________

START DATE: December 1, 2018

MIDDLE EAST & NORTH AFRICA (MENA) Region ____________________________________________________________________________

AFP is seeking an experienced Anglophone, Arabic-speaking television professional to work on its video desk in Nicosia.

Fast-paced and exciting, the job involves editing news video reports and feature packages from the Middle East and North Africa, and contributing to an international, multilingual team. Daily work involves editing live feeds and news footage from correspondents in the region and compiling voiced reports on a wide range of issues. It requires savvy editing, writing and narration skills for short-format (avg. 1:45 min) videos. It also includes reporting assignments. Good shooting skills are essential, including for live broadcasts.
Candidates must be native English speakers. Understanding of Arabic is necessary and the successful candidate would ideally speak French too.

The job involves assignments in the Middle East and North Africa, depending on the news and the agency’s needs. Training and experience working in hostile environments would be a plus, since some assignments could be in conflict zones.

The team’s work schedule involves an eight hours shift per day, including some weekends and late shifts. Timing may be changed depending on breaking news.

The successful candidate will report directly to the regional video editor-in-chief and his deputy, as well as the regional editor-in-chief.
He/she will have to maintain the credibility and reliability of our coverage and respect for the agency's editorial policy and copyright guidelines. He/she will have a very good knowledge of social media and user-generated content.

We are looking for someone with:
  • At least two years’ experience producing short-format hard news and news feature packages for broadcast and cable networks or for news agencies;
  • Good shooting/editing skills, including shooting video for live broadcast;
  • Strong television writing skills;
  • Honed digital non-linear editing skills, preferably on Final Cut Pro and/or Adobe Premiere and/or Sam (Quantel).
  • English as mother tongue, very good Arabic and French language skills;
  • Excellent news judgment and knowledge of current events;
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines;
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure and availability to work evenings and weekends.

The Nicosia newsroom is an open space comprising the photo, sports, Arabic, English and French desks. Video uses a separate office with an attached studio. The AFP regional office is situated in a modern building in the center of Nicosia.

Nicosia is a small city, but a pleasant place to live. Apartments and houses are generously proportioned and easily available within a short drive or walk to the office at reasonable prices. There are several international schools, including French, which cater for all ages (infants to high school students).
The climate is sunny throughout the year, with mild winters. Temperatures in July and August often exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Public transport is poor and a car or a motorcycle is a necessity.
Not by any means a cultural oasis by comparison with other European capitals, Nicosia is however an excellent place to enjoy the outdoors, and national parks, mountains and the eastern Mediterranean are easily reachable.
