Juba, Southern Sudan - July 6-12, 2011

On July 9th, Southern Sudan will become the 'Republic of South Sudan' (RSS) - the world's 193rd country and the 55th country in Africa.

Tensions have been high in the African nation since violence erupted on June 5th in two border regions, Abyei and Southern Kordofan - the North's main oil state which borders Southern Sudan - between the Northern military and Southern-aligned groups.

The population of Southern Sudan voted overwhelmingly for secession in a January referendum, which was part of the 2005 Naivasha Agreement between the Khartoum central government and the Sudan People's Liberation Army, aimed at ending two decades of conflict between the North and oil-rich South, in which some 1.5 million people have died. Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir said he would accept the verdict of the South, where most of Sudan's oil fields lie.

Celebrations, including a host of concerts, sports events and religious prayers are taking place throughout the week with the main events planned in Juba from July 8th - 10th.
