A powerful nor'easter is pounding the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast prompting over 5,000 flight cancellations, school closures and warnings from city and state officials to stay off the roads. The US National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings for parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont.

The storm is expected to dump 1 to 2 feet of snow on the New York City metro area with wind gusts of up to 55 mph.

The Associated Press is now operational with street-level live positions in downtown New York (World Trade Center area).

Please be advised the City of New York is currently experiencing thundersnow: heavy snow, sleet, lighting and very strong winds. Please make sure your correspondent is dressed appropriately.
