INFORMAL MEETING OF THE 27 HEADS OF STATE OR GOVERNMENT
VALETTA, MALTA
03 FEBRUARY 2017

Ahead of the the informal meeting of the 27 heads of state or government in Malta, Chancellor Merkel and President Hollande have called for unity within the European Union in facing up to the challenges both of Brexit and the Trump Presidency in the U.S.

In a joint press conference last Friday in Berlin, Merkel spoke of the need to meet the new challenge of defending free trade and a free society and Hollande spoke of promoting European values and interests in the face of the Trump presidency.
The informal meeting of the 27 heads of state or government in Malta is the follow-up of the Bratislava summit in September 2016, which began a political reflection on the future of the EU with 27 member countries.

The Malta Informal Summit 2017 will be held on the 3rd February at the Grandmaster's Palace in Valletta, Malta.

The informal meeting will consist of two parts.

In the morning, the 28 EU heads of state of government will address issues related to migration and are expected to focus their discussions on the Central Mediterranean route and Libya.

The afternoon session will be an occasion for the 27 leaders to prepare for the upcoming 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome which will take place in March.
