Eurovision News Events

Cologne, Germany, 04- February 2016

Womens Carnival, (Weiberfastnacht) will be held on February 4th in Cologne despite increased tension following the New Year’s Eve mass thefts and sexual assaults.
Violence broke out between police and demonstrators during protests by right wing groups and the anti-immigration Pegida organisation held in the wake of the attacks. Left wing groups have also protested in the city against racism and sexism.
The number of registered complaints arising from the events of New Year’s Eve has risen to over 500. Approximately 40 percent of these are related to sexual assaults. Politicians, the city police and German media have come under heavy criticism for allegedly downplaying the attacks in order to avoid tension between Germany’s Arab and North African populations and those opposing Germany’s open door asylum policy. The police investigation is concentrating mainly on men of North African origin, many of whom are asylum seekers or people who are in Germany illegally.
