The Extraordinary Jubilee Year for the Church, called “Holy Year of Mercy”, will begin on December 8 2015, the day of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and conclude on November 20 2016, the Feast of Christ the King.
The Pope told the faithful at St Peter’s Basilica: “Dear brothers and sisters, I have thought about how the Church can make clear its mission of being a witness of mercy.
“It is a journey that starts with a spiritual conversion. For this reason I have decided to declare an Extraordinary Jubilee that has the mercy of God at its center. It will be a Holy Year of Mercy.”
Pope Francis will open the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Square on December 8.
Huge security measures are expected in order to protect sensitive and symbolic areas.

On December 8 Pope Francis will inaugurate the extraordinary Year of Mercy by opening the Holy Door of St Peter's basilica in Rome. The Year of Mercy expects to attract millions of pilgrims and tourists to Rome.
But the Jubilee is also raising awareness on the security challenges that the capital of Italy will face in the upcoming months after the recent Islamic state's attacks in Paris. The Italian government has announced exceptional security measures to protect both pilgrims and citizens but Romans and tourists are still worried whether the Jubilee will make Rome a possible target for future attacks.
