Strasbourg, France - 22 October 2014

The European Parliament is expected to vote on Wednesday 22 October on the new Jean-Claude Juncker’s European Commission. The parliament must approve the whole Commission in order for it to take office on 1 November.

The incoming president of the EU executive had to urgently find a replacement for Slovenia’s Alenka Bratušek, who withdrew after the European Parliament rejected her. Jean-Claude Juncker promoted Maroš Šefcovic to vice-president for energy union. Šefcovic’s previous assignment, as commissioner for transport, went to Violeta Bulc, Bratušek’s designated replacement. Those two potential commissioners had to go through the confirmation hearings process on Monday 20 October.

Juncker is currently scheduled to present his Commission and work program to the plenary in Strasbourg on Wednesday morning, with a confirmation vote scheduled later in the day.
