Geneva, Switzerland - 29 September 2014

On 29 September, CERN will officially celebrate its 60th anniversary with a ceremony to be attended by government representatives from all 21 Member States and beyond. Now the world's biggest particle physics laboratory, CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) is celebrating “60 years of science for peace”.

CERN was established after the Second World War in 1954 by a handful of Europe’s leading scientists who saw an opportunity to construct an international laboratory for fundamental research that would bring nations together through science. Today CERN has 21 Member States and many other countries from around the world also participate in its research programme.
