Cairo, Egypt, 26-27 May 2014

Egypt will hold a presidential election on 26 and 27 May 2014. Only two candidates were submitted to the Supreme Election Committee, which obviates the need for a runoff.

Presidential elections were set after 2013 Egyptian coup d'état and June 2013 Egyptian protests, in which President Mohamed Morsi was overthrown, and following the January 2014 constitutional referendum.

Egypt's upcoming presidential elections will pit military strongman Abdel Fattah el-Sisi against self-styled Nasserist contender Hamdeen Sabbahi. Only these two candidates remain after the Muslim Brotherhood was eliminated from Egyptian politics and several other presidential hopefuls declared the current electoral process a sham.

Eurovision Special Events is operational with production and transmission facilities at a voting pool station in Cairo, at Gamal Abdel Nasser School, El Thawra Street, Mohandessin, close to Shooting Club.

Egyptians go to the polls on 26-27 May in a two-candidate presidential election widely expected to be won by the country's former military chief, who ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi last summer.

Retired field marshal Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who has a tidal wave of support behind him, faces underdog opponent Hamdeen Sabahi, a leftist politician trying to rally the youth vote.

There have been widespread calls for a boycott of the ballot by the Muslim Brotherhood and by some activists, who dismiss the election as a farce.
