The UK, France, and Germany announced that they would be expelling Syrian ambassadors to their countries, respectively.

"President Bashar al-Assad is murdering the Syrian people and must step down from power as soon as possible", French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Tuesday.

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague has confirmed that the Syrian charge d'affaires and two other diplomats are to be expelled from the UK as part of a coordinated move with other countries.

He said: "Our allies and partners around the world will be taking similar action, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United States, Canada and Australia".

The co-ordinated international diplomatic action came as Kofi Annan, representing the UN and the Arab League, met the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, in Damascus "to convey the grave concern of the international community about the violence in Syria"
