The official results of the first round of the historic Egyptian presidential elections, the first ever in Egypt where the results were not known in advance, are to be announced in Cairo today.

Muslim Brotherhood’s Morsy and Ahmed Shafiq, Hosni Mubarak’s last prime minister, received respectively 24.9% and 24.5% of the votes in the first round, according to unofficial results. Candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi who came in third still hopes to make the runoff after appealing against the first round results over electoral violations.

The second round will be held on June 16-17, pitting the two top contenders from the first round of voting. The victor is to be announced on June 21.
