An earthquake in northern Italy has killed at least five people and caused serious damage to buildings in several towns, officials say.

The 6.0-magnitude quake struck in the middle of the night, about 35km (22 miles) north of the city of Bologna.

Sant'Agostino, Italy - May 20, 2012

A strong earthquake hit northern Italy early on Sunday morning, causing at least four deaths and the collapse of rural factories and ancient bell towers in towns.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 02:04 GMT and had a magnitude of 5.9, was in the plains near Modena.

Thousands of people in the area rushed into the streets after the quake, felt in the major towns of Bologna, Modena, Ferrara, Rovigo, Verona and Mantua.

A series of strong aftershocks hit the area and local mayors ordered residents to stay out of their homes.

The last major earthquake to hit Italy was a 6.3 magnitude quake in the central Italian city of L'Aquila in 2009, killing nearly 300 people.

Eurovision Special Events is heading to in Sant'Agostino, near Ferrara, where the most damage has occured and will offer the following facilities on site :

A strong earthquake rocked a large swathe of northern Italy early on Sunday, killing at least three people and causing serious damage to the area’s cultural heritage. The 6.0 magnitude quake struck at 4:04 a.m. (0204 GMT) while most people were sleeping, and thousands ran into the streets in their night clothes in panic. GlobeCast will be providing facilities to broadcasters covering the event.
