Egypt's presidential elections committee announced it would stop its work in preparation for the presidential elections, due later this month, following what it said was an insult to the committee by members of parliament during its session on Monday.

The elections committee barred 10 candidates in April, including former spy chief Omar Suleiman and Muslim Brotherhood's Khairat al-Shater, from running for the elections next month.

It was not clear whether the committee’s decision to stop its work would affect the timeline for Egypt's landmark elections due on May 23 and 24.
