Egypt's army deployed extra troops on Wednesday to control clashes which erupted at a protest near the Defence Ministry in Cairo. Medical and security sources said the death toll had risen to eleven.

Witnesses described how the attackers set on them at dawn using rocks, clubs, firebombs and firing shotguns.

Eight armoured personnel carriers from the military central zone entered the Abbassiya area to disperse the fighting between protesters.
