Inauguration of Russian President-elect Vladimir Putin is set for May 7.
Putin announced he would step down as leader of the main Kremlin-controlled United Russia party after his inauguration. He suggested that Medvedev succeed him as the party's head.
However Putin is still facing opposition. Protests drew tens of thousands onto the streets of Moscow in the months ahead of the March presidential election which gave Putin, currently serving as prime minister, a third presidential term.
