20.04.2012Egypt: Mass demonstration *** ARCHIVE
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS I AP 360
Various youth groups have called for a mass demonstration in Cairo's Tahrir Square on 20 April, after Egypt's election commission rejected the appeals of three main contenders for the presidency.
The move follows the definitive removal of the most polarising candidates from the race to become Egypt's first elected leader since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak. There are concerns over the fallout of that decision.
Demonstrators on Friday are expected to include supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood, who have previously stayed out of protests organised by the youth groups who led last year's uprising.
The protest comes amid increasing tension between the Muslim Brotherhood and generals from the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.
Voting is due to begin on 23-24 May.
