Kabul, Afghanistan - September 7-12, 2011
September 11th, 2011, will mark the 10th anniversary of a series of coordinated suicide attacks on the United States. Osama bin Laden, former Al-Qaeda leader, claimed responsibility for the attacks.
The war in Afghanistan began on October 7, 2001, when the U.S. Armed Forces launched Operation Enduring Freedom along with the British Armed Forces and Afghan United Front (Northern Alliance) in response to the September 11 attacks with the stated goal of dismantling Al-Qaeda and ending its use of Afghanistan as a base for terrorist operations. The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was established by the Un Security Council in December 2001. NATO assumed control of ISAF in 2003. ISAF includes troops from more than 43 countries, with NATO members providing the core of the force.
After nearly a 10-year manhunt for Osama bin Laden, on May 1, 2011, U.S. President Barack Obama announced that American forces had killed bin Laden while he was hiding in Pakistan.
