08.08.2011United States: Financial crisis following US downgrade *** ARCHIVE

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS I AP 360

Stocks tanked again Tuesday as many global markets entered official bear market territory after one of the worst days on Wall Street since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008.

Asian markets briefly recouped many earlier losses and European stocks opened higher. That rally proved short-lived, as investors worried about the consequences of the U.S. credit downgrade, Europe's debt crisis and mounting expectations of a global recession.

New York, Monday August 8th 2011

All eyes are on Wall Street as world markets look to see how the New York Stock Exchange reacts to the decision by credit rating agency Standard & Poor's to downgrade US government debt.

The U.S. market is already in a very fragile state after barely stabilizing on Friday from a major sell-off the previous day.

There are growing fears that a combination of worries over US debt levels together with the crisis in the eurozone could lead to another major recession.

Eurovision Americas will offer live stand-up positions from outside the New York Stock Exchange on Monday.
