London and other cities throughout the UK remained calm overnight with thousands of police officers patrolling the streets.

Westminster Magistrates' Court has been working day and night to help deal with the 922 arrested and 401 charged over the London riots. Some of the persons convicted have already been sentenced to time in jail.

Speaking to Parliament on Thursday, British Prime Minister David Cameron told MPs the riots in cities across England were "criminality pure and simple", but there were "far too few police" on the streets.

In an emergency recall of Parliament, Cameron announced a crackdown on facemasks and a review on the use of curfews.

Violence began August 6 in the British capital's northern district of Tottenham over the Aug 4 fatal shooting of Mark Duggan by police. The unrest quickly spread to cities like Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Wolverhampton, Nottingham, Leicester and Birmingham.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS I AP 360

British Prime Minister David Cameron recalled Parliament from its summer recess and nearly tripled the number of police on the streets after days of rioting in London blossomed into a full-blown political crisis.

Parliament will return to duty on Thursday, as the political fallout from the rampage takes hold. The crisis is a major test for Cameron's Conservative-led coalition government, which includes Liberal Democrats who had long suspected its program of harsh budget restraints could provoke popular dissent.

Thousands of extra police officers on the streets kept a nervous London quiet Wednesday after three nights of rioting, but looting flared in Manchester and Birmingham, where a murder probe was opened when three men were killed after being hit by a car.

To aid your coverage, AP Global Media Services can offer a range of facilities in London, including:
• Live stand-up positions in Central London
• Multi-format tape playout facilities
• International delivery via APTNs satellite and fibre networks
