15.08.2011Egypt: Trial of Mubarak and sons *** ARCHIVE

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS I AP 360

The judge has adjourned the trial of ousted President Hosni Mubarak until August 15, ordering him held at a military hospital near Cairo and overseen by an oncologist.

The order by the judge is one of the strongest indications yet that the 83-year-old Mubarak has cancer after months of unconfirmed reports.

Mubarak attended the opening session of the trial lying in a hospital bed. The judge says that his trial on charges of complicity in killing protesters and corruption will continue on August 15, while the court will continue on Thursday hearing the case of his co-defendants, former interior minister Habib el-Adly, and six top security officials.

A maximum of 600 people are allowed to attend, although proceedings are televised. On 28 July, the ministry of justice announced that he was healthy enough to go on trial for corruption.
