Berlin, Germany - August 13, 2011
The commemoration ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall takes place on 13th August 2011.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, German Federal President Wulff, and many more VIPs from German politics and society will take part in this event.
The wall which was to be the visual symbol of Cold War Europe for 28 years, tore families, friends and neighbours apart. The barrier measured 160 kilometres (99.4 miles), when it was completed. The Iron Curtain as the Wall was famously known, came tumbling down in 1989, signalling the end of communism in Eastern Europe.
Today Berlin is a united city and part of a re-united Germany. Though much of its famous wall is no longer, some segments have been retained for historical purposes.
Eurovision Special Events is planning to establish production and transmission facilities in Berlin to assist broadcasters covering this story.

Berlin: A City Remembers - 50th Anniversary of Building the Berlin Wall
13th AUG 1961:
50 years ago the division of Germany was finally sealed by the construction of
the Berlin Wall. A 160-km-long border around West Berlin controlled by the military split the city.
The inhumanity of the Wall, the disruption, fates and hopes of the people on both sides are the theme of many events to mark the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Wall.

Memorials, museums, sights, and special tours are now available for visitors to Berlin, and for 2011 a selection of special commemorative events to mark the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall, will put a special emphasis on its inhumanity, and the disruption, fates and hopes of the people on both sides of the 99.4 mile (160 kilmometer) barrier.
