19.08.2011Russia: 20th anniversary of the 1991 Soviet coup d'état *** ARCHIVE
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS I AP 360
August 19 marks the 20th anniversary of the 1991 attempted coup in the former Soviet Union.
On August 19, 1991 a group of hardliners in the Politburo attempted to take power from Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. They were opposed to his reform programme and the proposed new union treaty, which would have seen central government yield much of its control and power to the republics. Gorbachev was put under house arrest at his vacation residence in the Crimea.
The coup lasted just two days. It failed due to a campaign of civil resistance led by Boris Yeltsin, then president of the Russian Federation. Yeltsin remained inside the Russian White House during the coup attempt, rallying democrats from the top of a tank.
Gorbachev returned to power on August 21 but power had shifted to Yeltsin. Within days the disgraced Communist Party was outlawed in Russia and just over four months later Gorbachev resigned as Soviet President. The next day, December 26 1991, the Soviet Union officially ceased to exist.

Eurovision News Events
Moscow, Russia - August 19, 2011
August 19 marks the twentieth anniversary of the 1991 Soviet coup d’etat attempt, which, though unsuccessful, set the scene for the demise of the Communist Party and, ultimately, the dissolution of the USSR.
Opposed to President Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms, a group of members of the Soviet Union’s government tried to take control over the country from its first and final president. Even though the coup collapsed in a mere two days, it is considered to have paved the way for events that would end the existence of the Soviet Union.
Eurovision Special Events will establish production and transmission facilities on the Taras Shevchenko Embankment, opposite the White House in Moscow, including:
Standup positions for live programme inserts
