20.07.2011United Kingdom: Murdoch -- phone hacking scandal *** ARCHIVE
Eurovision News Events
London, Great Britain - July 18-20, 2011
News Corporation Chairman and Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch and his son, Deputy Chief Operating Officer James Murdoch, are scheduled to attend a U.K. parliamentary committee, along with former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks, to answer questions on allegations that the media giant's now-defunct News of the World tabloid regularly hacked mobile phone voice mails to obtain information.
London police arrested Rebekah Brooks, Murdoch's former British CEO, in the phone hacking and police bribery scandal on Sunday, July 17th, bringing the U.K. investigation into Murdoch's inner circle for the first time. Brooks, 43, was questioned on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications — phone hacking — and on suspicion of corruption, which relates to bribing police for information. She was later released on bail.
Murdoch's News Corporation withdrew it's 12 Billion USD bid for control of BSkyB on July 13th, amid pressure over the phone-hacking scandal. Rebekah Brooks resigned from her post as Chief Executive of News International on July 15th. The London Metropolitan police chief Paul Stephenson has also resigned.
British Prime Minister David Cameron has called for an emergency session of Parliament on Wednesday, July 20th, to brief lawmakers on the spreading phone hacking scandal. Although Parliament is due to break for the summer on July 19th after lawmakers question Murdoch, his son James and Rebekah Brooks, Cameron said "it may well be right to have Parliament meet on Wednesday so I can make a further statement."
