Eurovision News Events

The Hague, Netherlands - July 4, 2011

The trial of former Bosnian Serb military Commander Ratko Mladic is due to resume on July 4th.

Mladic faces 11 counts of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes stemming from the 1992-to-1995 Bosnia civil war. He, along with Bosnian Serb political leader Radovan Karadzic, also on trial, is accused of ordering what is considered to be the worst atrocity in Europe since World War II - the massacre in the U.N.-protected Srebrenica enclave.

Ratko Mladic appeared for the first time before judges on June 3, following his arrest in Serbia last month after more than 15 years on the run. He dismissed the charges against him as “monstrous” and “obnoxious” and asked for more time to enter a plea. The judge granted him his request and adjourned the proceedings until July 4.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS I AP 360

Former Bosnian Serb military chief Ratko Mladic is due back in court July 4 and if he again refuses to plead, judges will enter not guilty pleas on his behalf.

Mladic is charged with genocide and other offenses for orchestrating atrocities committed by Serb forces throughout the 1992-95 Bosnian war. He faces a maximum life sentence if convicted.

Mladic appeared frail but healthy at a hearing last month at which he said he was not ready to enter pleas to the 11 charges against him.
Preparations for his trial are expected to take several months.
