On Saturday, July 4, Iran will begin a dayslong funeral for Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed an airstrike at the start of the Iran war. Khamenei, 86, governed Iran for decades as its paramount ruler and his killing elevated his son, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, as the country's new supreme leader.

The funeral will serve as a test for Iran's theocracy to get people into the street as a show of support for its battered theocracy, particularly as the funeral coincides with the six-month anniversary of a security force crackdown on nationwide protests against Khamenei's rule.

The funeral will begin in Tehran. Khamenei's casket will also be in Karbala, Iraq, home to the Imam Hussein shrine. It will also travel to Baghdad and Najaf. The funeral will end in the Shiite holy city of Mashhad in Iran, where he will be buried in the Imam Reza shrine.
