THE ASSOCIATED PRESS I AP 360

World Cup Semifinals - Fan Reaction
Multiple locations | July 14-15, 2026

It’s a World Cup semifinal lineup for the ages. Four previous champions and the four top-ranked teams in the world. Five of the six top scorers, one GOAT, and one of soccer’s bitterest rivalries. France, Spain, England, and Argentina are two wins away from being crowned world champions again, and it is just too close to call in either semifinal matchup.

Not since 1990 has the World Cup semifinal four been composed entirely of previous winners. Kylian Mbappé’s France plays Lamine Yamal's Spain in Tuesday’s first semifinal. England’s Jude Bellingham and Argentina’s Lionel Messi face off in Wednesday’s semifinal.

France and Spain meet again in the semifinals of a major tournament, just two years after going head-to-head at the European Championship. Argentina must overcome England in a match that reignites a fierce rivalry that extends beyond the soccer field, with tensions also stemming from the 1982 Falklands Islands conflict.
