Argentina Presidential Election
Buenos Aires, Argentina | Oct. 22-23, 2023

The presidential election set for Oct. 22 could send Argentina down a path of abrupt and far-reaching policy shifts.

The elections will be held amid soaring triple-digit inflation, and government difficulties making good on its crushing debt to the IMF.

Javier Milei, a freshman lawmaker who describes himself as an “anarcho-capitalist,” surprised experts when he emerged as the top vote-getter in the nation's August primaries. The right-wing populist is an open admirer of former U.S. President Donald Trump, and his positions appear cribbed from U.S. conservative talking points.

The second and third top polling candidates are the more business friendly Economy Minister Sergio Massa and former Security Minister Patricia Bullrich. A November runoff is possible.
