CELAC Summit

Latin America’s leaders will descend on Buenos Aires for the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), to be held on January 24.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio “Lula” Da Silva will attend the summit after a three-year absence, and a signal of the re-emergence of the Argentina-Brazil axis in regional politics, including a push for creating a common currency, aimed to drive regional business and reduce reliance on the US dollar.

Heightened security is expected, with more than 20 regional leaders attending the event. Activists are calling for protests to denounce the scheduled presence of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
