Peru Unrest
Lima, Peru | January 23, 2023 - onwards

Peru has indefinitely shut its iconic tourist site Machu Picchu in the latest sign that anti-government protests are increasingly engulfing the South American country.

The Culture Ministry said that is has closed Peru’s most famous tourist attraction as well as the Inca Trail leading up to the site. The tourism minister says 417 tourists are stuck in Machu Picchu who can’t get out, more than 300 of whom are foreigners.

Protesters have descended on the capital of Lima largely from remote Andean regions to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte. Protests had largely been confined to Peru's south since anger erupted last month of Congress impeaching President Pedro Castillo, who was Peru’s first leader with a rural Andean background.
