Brazil Presidential Elections
Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo | Sep. 30- Oct. 3, 2022

There are two clear frontrunners in Brazil's upcoming presidential election. President Jair Bolsonaro trails former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in polls before the Oct. 2 vote. They will likely top the first round and compete in a runoff at the end of the month.

The far-right Bolsonaro has recently cast doubt on the reliability of the nation’s electronic voting system. During his speeches on Independence Day, Bolsonaro compared da Silva to autocratic leftist leaders in Venezuela and Nicaragua and called Brazil's former president “a gangster.

Da Silva is known universally as Lula and leads all major polls to return to the job he held from 2003 to 2010. He has sought to remind Brazilians of the economic growth during his tenure, which coincided with the commodities boom, and how he vastly expanded social programs.

Polls show Lula close at near or above the key threshhold of more than 50% of valid first-round votes, which would eliminate the need for a runoff. Bolsonaro is roughly 15 percentage points behind.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

With just days to go before the 2 October presidential election in Brazil, former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has further widened his lead over incumbent Jair Bolsonaro. A recent poll shows former president Lula with a 13-percentage point lead over his far-right rival. The election could see the return of the world’s fourth-largest democracy to a leftist government after four-years of far-right leadership under Bolsonaro.

Eurovision will offer live standup positions in Rio de Janeiro.
