Blinken Heads To U.N. Amid Ukraine Tensions
New York, Kiev, Moscow | February 17, 2022

Underscoring the urgency with which the U.S. views the situation with Ukraine, Secretary of State Antony Blinken is making a hastily arranged stop in New York to speak to the U.N. Security Council about escalating concerns of a Russian invasion.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield told reporters in a conference call that she had asked Blinken to speak to the Security Council given the “gravity” of the Russian threat. “Evidence suggests that Russia is moving toward an imminent invasion,” she said. “This is a crucial moment.”

NATO allies accused Russia of misleading the world with “disinformation” by saying it was returning some troops to bases, charging that Moscow has instead added as many as 7,000 more troops near its tense border with Ukraine.
