On Thursday 20th January, teen pilot Zara Rutherford will become the youngest woman to circumnavigate the world solo when she lands in Wevelgem, Belgium. Zara avoided typhoons, wildfires and missiles in her solo flight around the world.

The 51,000-km trip is spanning five continents and 52 countries.

At the age of 19, she is set to land her single-seater Shark sport aircraft in Kortrijk, Belgium, on Monday, more than 150 days after setting out to become the youngest woman to circumnavigate the world solo. American aviator Shaesta Waiz was 30 when she set the previous benchmark.

Zara recently finished her A-Levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics, and Physics, and plans to pursue a degree in computer science at university.

She hopes that her endeavour to break the record will encourage more girls and women to pursue careers in STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. The statistics suggest that only 5% of commercial pilots and 15% of computer scientists are female.

UPDATE, 17th January 2022 - 9AM CET: Due to bad weather, the flight with Zara arriving in Wevelgem has been postponed.
